Alekhine Defence - Modern Variation

Alekhine modern boardUnder one opening you will find two variations of Alekhine Defence. The reason why is that both variations are different with different statistic of success. The principle of Opening is to provoke White to advance his pawns in an attempt to prove that these advanced center pawns are in facts a weakness rather than a strength. The opening was started to be using in 1921 by Alexander Alekhine, later World Champion. It was era of hyper-modern lines of variations based on non symmetric positions and unbalanced materials, which makes the Opening a good choice for aggressive fighting players. Negative of that defence is that : Black gives away space for no significant return. White routinely obtains control of the board leaving Black with little room to maneuver. But the coin has two faces. Blacks plan is destroy center of White and after that prepares the counter attack. This Opening is characterized by very wild positions because attacks and counterattacks played maybe during the same time yet it is about time and tempo who wins. If the opponent is not weak you can expect very interesting game.
The 2nd variation - Introduction of Alekhine Defence is same, but differences are bigger than you thought. Moves as White  4/ f4  in Four Pawn Attack are very aggressive but we can ask ourselves "don't we over do it?" It depends of the master knowledge. Interesting situation is in Correspondence Chess. Many times used engines prefer White more than it is necessary. Then White can feel false good. False ranking can do the problems. The Modern Defence Variation of Alekhine Defence  changed move to 4/ Nf3, starts developing figures and it makes big difference of next positions. You can look into the Opening tables and next moves of Black 4/ .. g6 /Alburt Variation / and other answers which have better statistics of games for White. Now it is harder for Black to equalize or counterattack because he starts maneuvering and White has bigger space. It doesn't matter, if Black playes plays carefully it can draw some wild positions too. The opening is played by Alburt, Baburin, Bagirov, Vaganian , Varga Z...
