The ultimate RECAP of chess formats

kolazI am writing this post as a hybrid between a systems programmer / Modula-2 /, the creator of chess databases / Opening Master /, chess player / ICCF SIM / and user of all programs currently available on the market. Let’s start from "ground zero", because many people still confuse these. Let’s see the different concepts and different perspectives on the same topic as an interesting new development for the future.

How OM deals with PGN

pawn Did you know that OM actually loves PGN. Despite the original format was invented some 19 years ago it is still very popular worldwide. Opening Master enriches now the Blue Plan with OM OTB PGN version (before it was only OM GOLEM) for those who use mostly SCID this is great news. Of course we didn't forget the other plans and OM OTB with its 6,135.474games was just released. And now something about PGN how it all started. PGN was devised around 1993, by Steven J. Edwards, and was first popularized via the Usenet newsgroup rec.games.chess. PGN is structured "for easy reading and writing by human users and for easy parsing and generation by computer programs." The chess moves themselves are given in algebraic chess notation. The usual filename extension is ".pgn".

Winner

If we would now go to any competition among chess databases, I guess we would just win all oscars, grammies, palms and other trophies for today's submission. The OM Golem for the first time reached the critical mass of 8 millions followed by OTB extract with 6 millions games. We just put Chess Base and Chess Assistant into 2nd league players....

Google rated Opening Master #1

googleno1Opening Master was recently rated as # 1 on Google.com for it's "largest chess database". We are very proud and hope to keep the top position for a while. Since the inception we have focused primarily on providing quality games rather than quantity, although over the years we reached the critical mass of 7.7 millions of games. This is something which no other database can claim - so many human games under one roof.

6-men Nalimov End Games

lx00dd0bThe phases of chess games have been already set long time ago. The endgames, no dispute, have been elaborated by many authors on sevaral examples (e.g. J.Averbach: Chess Endgames) or others. One of the first pioneers who began to examine the deterministic approach of the endgames, how games finish, how to reach the goal in the quickest time was Eugen Nalimov. At the beginning he analyzed 3-4-5 pieces board and later on added the 6 pieces (-6 men including the kings). The basic information about his work and tablebases can be found at : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablebase with many sub-links and supportive articles.

The authors of openingmaster.com have collected all Nalimov’s endgames 3-4-5 but also all 6 endgames. See http://kirill-kryukov.com/chess/tablebases-online/ .

It is a respectful number of 295 6-men endgames in 2,512 files totaling 1,232 Tera-bytes. There are several professional articles examining how much one should actually own at his local hard drive or disk in order to be efficient. Several players prefer to have all endgames (100% coverage) with of course high peak time of loading the program for indexing the endgames yet some claim to need only 200-300 MB of these endgames. (but with coverage more than 90%).
The catastrophic scenario comes when one needs the endgame but doesn’t have it loaded on the hard disk. The downloading of any endgame from the internet is very time consuming and patient work with knowledge of the best resources to look for.

Download with the link below entire 295 endgames summary excel sheet with frequency statistics.

Therefore our service which is offered for the first time ever on the internet is basically priceless. Some companies try to offer endgames on DVDs but as you can imagine the volume of DVDs compared to our ‘terabytes’ they cannot get even close to the numbers openingmaster.com offers.

4th of July

id.png It is Indenpedence Day today in US. For USA this is probably THE most important day to celebrate. To celebrate with our US chess friends we think it would be nice to give 50% discount from the next two days of sales back to the new subscribers. That is instead of 39,90 you pay only 19,95 EUR. That's a good deal!

And what's new? Well, we just broke our personal record with human games in one single Correspondence Database = 1,003.030 games. Not sure if there is anywhere else such large collection off correspondence games.

So what else did we prepare for you this month?

1/ OM 1.10 = 6,213.832 games

2/ OM 2300 = 1,132.128 games

3/ OM 2500 = 199.385 games

4/ OM Corr = 1,003.030 games

5/ OM Corr 2300 = 120.609 games

Of course the files are in various mutations for example Chess Assistant, PGN or older CBF...Enjoy

As mentioned earlier, since there are not so many games coming out and the update is a painful process, we are currently moving to the quarterly releases, so expect a new update around October 5, 2011. Until then we will be working on new commented games, new OM website, template, security system and sometimes releasing the new cool opening

with regards
your Opening master team...
